More BCS Ramblings

It happened: USC passed Michigan in the latest BCS rankings. Barring a disaster in the Rose Bowl Saturday against UCLA, the Trojan Men should have a date with the Ohio State Buckeyes on January 8 in Glendale, Arizona. Michigan would then be in line for a consolation prize: a trip to the Rose Bowl in Pasadena.

The LSU Tigers find themselves fifth in the latest BCS rankings. They will be cheering for Arkansas on Saturday. If 4th-ranked Florida loses to the Hogs, LSU will move up in the rankings. The top four teams in the BCS rankings are guaranteed a BCS bowl bid. LSU stands a good chance at a BCS at-large bid, regardless.

The BCS is kicking themselves over Wisconsin. The Badgers are 11-1, and ranked 7th in the BCS standings, but will be relegated to the Capital One Formerly Known As The Florida Citrus Bowl. The BCS bowls are limited to two teams per conference, and Ohio State and Michigan will represent the Big 10 in the BCS. One of these bowls would love to have 40 or 50,000 cheeseheads come to their city and watch their Badgers. Instead, the Badgers will return to Beautiful Downtown Orlando, where they defeated Auburn last January 1.

Props to the Rice Owls. The Feisty Nightbirds qualified for their first bowl since Noah was loading the Ark, with a 31-27 win over SMU. SMU is bowl-eligible for the first time since they were paying players, but will not be in a bowl game. Rice was 1-10 last year, and have made a quick turnaround under coach Todd Graham. The Owls will most likely appear in the Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl in Fort Worth, against TCU.

Not that TCU belongs in BCS talk, but I didn't know where else to put this ... the "Bell Helicopter Bowl" comments way down there seem so far away since you've posted so much lately. Anyway, I got the official email tonight from TCU. They are going to the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl. YEE HAW!!!!!!!!!! I was shocked. I thought it would another lame-o Fort Worth Bowl, not that this is any better, but it ain't the FW Bowl! Still way early, but since they sucked against the mormons this year, what do we expect. I don't know who were playing, but I'm sure we'll have a great victory on December 19!

San Diego is much better in December than Fort Worth. And, it's better to play Northern Illinois than to play Tulsa.

The Feisty Knightbirds are going somewhere else, and Tulsa is playing Utah in Fort Worth.

The sad thing about all these bowls: no one remembers who won or lost them except for the BCS championship game. TCU might as well get a nice trip to Sunny San Diego out of the deal. And, they'll most likely have an 11 win season.

I know their season, overall, is not shaping up to be so bad, but I hope they do better next year. They should have beaten the Mormons.

Overall, I'm very impressed with Coach Peterson. I was sad when Coach Fran left and thought for sure that it was downhill from there, but I was proved wrong. Coach Peterson is even better for TCU, imho and Coach Fran just saved his job this weekend ... at least for another year.

Coach Patterson has a LOT of job security at TCU. The powers that be think he is great. He would be risking a lot to go to a middle-rung program in a BCS conference (like Arizona State). He can win 9-10 games every year at TCU, and go undefeated when the planets line up correctly. Fort Worth is a good place to live, and TCU is paying him well.

Plus, we're all seeing now that he was Fran's brain when Fran was at TCU.

Hey! Where's the RICE OWLS bowl game talk? They got their first bowl bid since 1961. You're in H-land. What about it?

Ya gotta love the Feisty Nightbirds! That is a miracle. It is totally awesome. They lost their first four games, but they were against Houston, UCLA, Texas, and Florida State. They had a freshman player die after practice one day, and bounced back to win seven of their last eight. And, they kept SMU from going to their first bowl since the governor was paying players there.

The talk this week is U of H, because they are pimping the C-USA championship game Friday night. They are trying to get a sellout, something U of H only gets when they play Texas. It's Friday night against Southern Miss on ESPN2.
