NFL Picks: Week 3

Last Week: 12-4. Overall: 21-11.

At this point, the NFL has 11 teams with a record of 2-0, and 11 teams with a record of 0-2. That leaves 10 teams in the middle at 1-1, and creates symmetry for the league, with an even number of teams at the top and bottom. Useless information for the most part, but the trends make a lot of the picks easier.

Washington at Houston: In which way is the city of Houston better off: a) with the hard-luck Oilers, b) without a team, or c) with the sorry Texans? Each point is debatable. The Texans continue to redefine the word suck. The Redskins haven't been much better. Clinton Portis is back this week for the 'Skins. Pick: Washington.
Cincinnati at Pittsburgh: Big early game in the AFC North. Cincinnati has some guys banged up. Pittsburgh returns home after laying a big goose egg in Jacksonville. The Steelers bounce back. Pick: Pittsburgh.
Jacksonville at Indianapolis: The Jags are one of the few teams that can hang with the Colts. I'm struggling with whether to play Peyton Manning in my fantasy league this week. This will be a good game. Home dome advantage comes into play. Pick: Indy
Chicago at Minnesota: The Bears have added some offense, and the Vikings have shocked the world by winning their first two games. The HHH Metrodome will be rocking. That won't be enough. Pick: Da Bears
Carolina at Tampa Bay: Both teams need this win desperately. The Bucs need an offense in the worst way, scoring three points in the first two games. This one could end up being 6-3, but I'll take the Bucs.
Green Bay at Detroit: The Pack is really hard to figure. Brett Favre threw for a million yards last week, but the Pack still lost. Detroit still hasn't won a game. Someone has to win here. Give me Detroit.
New York Jets at Buffalo: The Jets are vastly improved. That happens when you get your starting quarterback back from injury. Buffalo is surprising, as well. Pick: J-E-T-S
Tennessee at Miami: Yuck. The Dolphins have been disappointing. The Titans just stink. Daunte Culpepper throws the Titans into his inferno. Pick: Miami.
Baltimore at Cleveland: Or, Old Browns vs. New Browns. The Ravens are getting good play from QB Steve McNair, Jamal Lewis is back into form, and the Ravens' defense is playing well, as usual. The Browns are pathetic. Pick: Baltimore.
New York Giants at Seattle: Good game, replay of one of last year's better regular season games. The G-Men are coming off of an incredible comeback last week in Philly. I can't see it happening two weeks in a row. Pick: Seattle.
Philadelphia at San Francisco: The Iggles travel to the Left Coast after blowing a big lead last week against the New York Football Giants. The 49ers are better this year, but not as good as the Eagles. Pick: Philly
St. Louis at Arizona: New St. Louis vs. Old St. Louis. The Rams can best be described as inconsistent. The Cardinals have a new lease on life in their new stadium. They are an offensive juggernaut waiting to explode. Pick: Arizona
Denver at New England: The Broncos stagger into Foxboro coming off of an ugly 9-6 win over the Chiefs. The Patriots have a two-headed running back monster of Corey Dillon and Lawrence Maroney. On this Weekend in New England, give me the Pats.
Atlanta at New Orleans: Both teams are undefeated. The Superdome has been repaired, and the Saints finally return to the Big Easy for their first home game in two years. This may be the best atmosphere for a regular-season NFL game in years, perhaps ever. I'd love to have a ticket for this one. How can you pick against the Saints in this one? Pick: New Orleans.

Check out Krusty the Clown's picks this week at http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/5992560.

He picks Hartford and won't pick the game that plays while the Simpsons are on. lol

Here are my picks - if you care!

Washington at Houston: WAS, but not by much.

Cincinnati at Pittsburgh: Cincy again! Roth doesn't have it back yet.

Jacksonville at Indianapolis: Indy again - they won't blow it yet.

Chicago at Minnesota: Bears ... I wonder what Paul the Damn Viking is thinking with his stinking team.

Carolina at Tampa Bay: I pick Carolina, but who knows on this one.

Green Bay at Detroit: DTW

New York Jets at Buffalo: I hate to go against the Bills, but I'm with you ... J-E-T-S, Jets, Jets!

Tennessee at Miami: The Phins

Baltimore at Cleveland: Balt

New York Giants at Seattle: Oooh ... this is tough. My heart says Giants, but it's at C. I'm going with the heart (and my keeper) this week.

Philadelphia at San Francisco: I pick Akers to take out V. Davis this week. lol

St. Louis at Arizona: I will go with ol' St. Louie!

Denver at New England: This is the game that Krusty wouldn't pick ... I pick the Pats too.

Atlanta at New Orleans: Ooooh I so don't want NO to win this one. I'm going with ATL even though NO is finally back home in the place where no one was raped or killed, despite what the mainstream media reported.

Those Krusty picks were pretty good. I've been to Detroit, and they don't have a Ritz-Carlton, but I've never stayed in a Ritz-Carlton, either. Speaking of Detroit, you've been there too, as you picked them by their airport code, DTW, instead of by DET. The airport is the best thing about that city. The new Northwest terminal is a palace.

I have to admit: I've never watched an entire episode of The Simpsons. I am partial, though, to King of the Hill. It's the redneck in me. :-)

And, you are correct, no one was raped or killed inside the Superdome after Katrina. There were deaths, but no murders.

Yeah, DTW is a place I've been many times. NWA area is greatness. The rest is a pit. They need to remodel all of it, but they haven't. I've flown SWA in there too and their part is 1967 airport including the smell. Oh, did you go through the funky tunnel at the NW part of the airport? It goes from the A concourse to the B and C side. I love it. The second best thing is the water fountain fun thing.

I've also been to Tiger Stadium, Comerica Park, The Detroit Institute of Art, and Greektown.

Have you seen this graphic?

I had no idea that FEMA paid $115 million to help rebuild the Superdome. That seems ridiculous to me and not what FEMA is for, but what do I know?

John said...

Yeah, the Superdome is the "shelter of last resort", so FEMA gave them money to rebuild it. The Saints were trying to get a new stadium before Katrina, and the state of Louisiana was giving them money just to be there. That is totally screwed up. Obviously, the state has much more important things now. The Saints have sold out the season, but ticket prices have been reduced, and there are no local corporate sponsors as of yet. I look for the Saints and maybe the Chargers to end up in LA within the next 5 years.

Two teams in LA? Apparently, Fox doesn't want CBS to have LA all to itself as a home team market. They want to share it, just as they do in New York, and as they did in LA before the Rams and Raiders skipped town. The two finalists for stadiums are a remodeled Coliseum (deep in the barrio) and a new stadium in the parking lot of the Angels' stadium in Anaheim. That's chasing a rabbit, isn't it?

As a result of my former job, I've been to Detroit three times this year: twice for work in the area, and once to change planes. Continental has gates in the Northwest terminal at DTW, and I had to go through that tunnel connecting the parts of the terminal. It has a cool music and light show. At first, I thought: "What a waste of taxpayer money. Why don't they just sell advertising through here like in every other airport in this country?" But, maybe NWA paid for it (as they fight bankruptcy), and it is pretty cool. For what it's worth, they are building another new terminal for the other airlines. I've heard the current one is a total dump.

More about Detroit: I had dinner one night at the Hockeytown Cafe, across the street from Comerica Park. I drove by Ford Field, Joe Louis Arena, and what's left of Tiger Stadium. I was working out in Oakland County, so I went by the Palace and the Silverdome, as well. Greektown has a casino, but I went to Windsor to play slots. I'd rather gamble with Canadian funny money. It's real money, but I thought it was funny that their $10 bill was a combination of purple and pink-it felt like Monopoly money. I don't do poker.

If anyone from Canada cruises by here: I liked visiting your country. I hope to go back sometime. You probably think our green money is funny. :-)

Zee said...

Our money is just as funny now. Have you seen the cool new orange ten dollar bill? Oh yeah!

Deet is a cool place, but just make sure you don't end up in the wrong part (and there are many wrong parts). I've been through Windsor as I drove from Toledo to Toronto. Yeah, that customs check was ridiculous. I was questioned for bringing too many shoes and cassette tapes. Evidently they are very against Amway (or whatever they are called now) because they asked me with hostility if my tapes were Amaway and they were not. They were sermon tapes and I even showed them to the lady. She was a nut.

Anyway, coming back in was a breeze. I think they asked if I was a citizen of the US and that was about it. Of course, this was pre-9/11.

As for the cool music and light tube, I love it. I don't care if taxpayers paid for it or not. ;) I doubt they did. I think NWA paid for most of that airport because it's their one of their hubs.

And the Superdome being the "shelter of last resort" I think the Cowboys should have claimed that with their stadium instead of having Arlington use "emminent domain" to steal land from people.

John said...

I'm sure NWA paid for a good chunk of that terminal. I know it sure hasn't hurt Detroit, though. They need all the help they can get.

I'm impressed that you were able to get sermon tapes into Canada. It's not Cuba or Saudi Arabia by any means, but the authorities there don't mind the Bible, as long as the part discussing homosexuality isn't discussed. The Bible then becomes hate speech, and a threat to their idea of utopia. They have a more US and Christian-friendly government there now, so hopefully things will change.

The last time I drove across the tunnel, the Canadians had me pull over, and they searched my rental car. The car had nothing in it, but they had to search it anyway. They were probably looking for a gun. I don't have a gun at all, and I sure enough don't pack heat on the road. I've always had a hard time getting back into the US, because I've always been in a rental car with a Texas license and a State Department birth certificate. I really need to spring for a passport. :-)

As for football and Detroit, the Lions stink again. At least Roy Lee Williams showed up yesterday. That helped my fantasy team.

Maybe Jerry could build "The World's Largest Tornado Shelter", complete with 80,000 seats and luxury boxes. LOL
